๐Ÿ” Problem Statement

After art class we have to clean up our scraps which takes a long time. It's annoying to have to pick up all the tiny pieces. If we didn't have to pick up the pieces we would have more time to do art.

๐Ÿ’ก Solution

If you did all your messy work inside of a box, there'd be no scraps on the floor because they would be inside of the box. Then you could put the scraps in the trash from inside the box.

โœ๏ธ Early Design

If the box was cardboard you couldn't see through it. But if it was clear you could see through it. You wouldn't want it to be glass because it would break if you accidentally dropped it. If it was clear plastic, if you dropped it then it wouldn't break.

It has to be easy to work inside the box. So we could make holes for your arms. The plastic edges of the arm holes would be uncomfortable for your arms, so we could use a soft fabric around the holes.

It would be cool if we had a cup to put pencils and things in it.

๐Ÿ”ง Execution

Once we had all of our materials, we started building.

All the materials laid out
2

First we measured the sides to mark a place for the holes. I decided I wanted the holes in the middle on each side.

3

I used a sharpie and a coffee pot to draw the circles. My dad and I traced the bottom of the coffee pot.

4

Then I drilled four or five holes in each circle. I picked the biggest chonkiest drill bit for the holes because the plastic was hard and it made it easier to put the clippers in later.

5

We used strong clippers to cut through the plastic and make the holes.

6

I tested out the holes and they felt jagged.

7

When we were drilling the plastic cracked on one side. We used gorilla glue to mend it.

8

We used a piece of sand paper to flatten the jagged edges. The sandpaper didn't do a good job of getting rid of the jagged edges. But that's okay because we planned to put fabric around the holes.

9

The fabric we bought was too big so we had to cut it in half.

10

We wanted to glue the fabric together so it would stay folded but the glue didn't work very good so we figured out that putting dots of glue on it is better than a line.

11

Then we glued the fabric to the sides of the hole. We realized that putting your head in the box was not good because there were fumes from the glue. Also, I got glue on my hands so I wore gloves for the next hole.

The fabric felt good on my arms.

We wanted the cup to be able to hang from the box. We put together a metal hook made with screws but it kept falling off.

14

We also found a clip, but I had trouble opening it.

15

So we found a golden hook for hanging a picture frame and it worked. But we had to get it attached to the cup.

I used a blue plastic cup and drilled a hole in the cup. This time I started with a small bit so the plastic wouldn't crack.

Then I used a bit that matched the hook size just right.

My dad flattened out the hook with his pliers.

And then I pushed the hook through the hole in the cup.

And then my dad bent the hook back into place.

We tested out the hook and the cup could hang from the box.

We were finished building so I tested out the box. I made a kitty cat that could open its mouth. I cut out the kitty cat inside the box. There were no scraps on the floor.

It was easy to pour my scraps in the trash when I was done.
